Chaos (and chaos theory, too, I guess) represents not confusion so much as a certain piece by piece and element by element layering, like the way crystals grow, molecule by molecule, each successive element attaching itself to what is there, molecules as entities coming out of the soup of a solution to find a way to precipitate, to coelesce. It's chemistry as much as anything.
I think it got labeled "chaos" because there does not seem to be any good way to steer the results precisely as YOU would have them, making the results you DO get quite mysteriously beautiful and sometimes very very spooky.
